Fibre Artist
Te Aroha New Zealand

Raewyn is a professional fibre artist, operating her gallery/studio in the picturesque spa town of Te Aroha, 90 minutes drive SE of Auckland, our largest New Zealand city. From a background of wool crafts and weaving, she became totally hooked on the felt making process in the early 90s.

Raewyn’s time is split between creating products for her gallery (plus other selected outlets), and traveling extensively to run workshops covering a wide variety of student skill levels and techniques.
Felt-making can be described as ‘painting with wool’. Fine New Zealand merino wool is Raewyn’s primary base material, but also works with alpaca and other fibres. Felt is a totally natural, durable and light fabric where colour, texture, form and functionality can all be combined into a wide range of unique outcomes, from fashion through to art.

Raewyn’s first love is fashion clothing and accessory design, but also creates other products such as wall hangings and carpet bags. She is constantly experimenting to develop new techniques and effects, and always enjoys sharing knowledge with her students.

Although time is somewhat limited due to business commitments, Raewyn regularly participates in exhibitions and fashion parades, both in New Zealand and overseas. She has been involved in many regional and national exhibitions in a judging capacity. She has held the NZ Creative Fibre ‘National Tutor’ status for the last 10 years.

Workshop fees: $420.00 ($370.00 for students) – includes NZ merino wool, lunch, morning and afternoon tea for 4 days. Accommodation is NOT included.

Programme:

Day 1
Students will create a small sampler learning many embellishment techniques and colour combinations – this will help with detail of colour choice and design of their jacket.
A basic individualised pattern will be made and then students will begin to felt the back of their jackets.

Day 2 
Felting of jacket front and start of sleeves.

Day 3   
All felted pieces will be finished.
The jacket will be fitted and sewing up of the garment will commence.

Day 4  
Students will continue to sew up garments plus learn finishing techniques and closures.
Modelling of jackets to finish the course.

Materials

Raewyn will be bringing NZ merino wool with her in the colour range selected by each participant. The cost for the wool ($50.00) is included in the workshop fees. Silk and organza pieces are optional and will be an additional cost.

Participants will be required to nominate their colour schemes at the time of booking (and paying for) their place in the workshop. Colour chips should be sent with booking forms or Pantone colours nominated.

Participants are encouraged to bring any special fabrics, lace or yarns they would like to utilise in the construction of their jacket.

Work kit to bring:

Bubblewrap – a piece 2 metre x 1 metre
Nylon net – 1 metre length
Broom handle or dowling rod same diameter – 1 metre length
Bucket
Plastic jug
Old clean towels – four per participant
Bar of pure soap or lux flakes

Sewing kit – tape measure, pins, needles and marker
Notebook
Digital camera is handy for note-taking too

Students will be exploring a variety of art media each day – painting, printmaking, sculpture and many others. Jenny will assist the group to experiment with new techniques and create finished work to add to their ‘portfolio’.

Places are limited to 10 participants. Suitable for students aged between 8 and 14.

Cost is $149.00 per student for the series of eight classes running from Monday to Thursday for two weeks. Commencing Monday 29 June 09, classes run from 10:00am to 12:00 midday and finish on Thursday 9 July 09.

Materials – materials cost is included in the class fee.

Serena Lindeman, trained in London, is an award-winning Milliner based in Melbourne. Serena will be presenting two one day workshops that are suitable for all levels of experience. Beginners will have a fabulous introduction to the Millinery art and those with some experience will have ample opportunity to hone their skills further.

Workshop 1
Saturday 12 September from 10am to 5pm

Sculpted Headpiece using sinamay and feathers. Working with sinamay and feathers, Serena will show participants how to create a contemporary headpiece using traditional millinery techniques. They will be encouraged to ‘let their hair down’ in this workshop to create a free form and eye-catching headpiece.

Workshop 2
Sunday 13 September from 10am to 5pm

Covered headpiece with a silk organza flower and veiling.

Participants will be able to cover a pre-blocked cocktail shape with a chosen fabric to compliment the outfit of their choice. Serena will then show participants how to make silk organza flowers to create a stunning more formal evening or wedding headpiece using silk flowers and veiling.

Serena will also demonstrate some of her millinery tricks to customise bought flowers. Participants may elect to bring a piece of fabric (dupion silk, light weight non-see through fabrics are best, allow 25 cms.)

Please let us know your colour preference when booking as the silk organza will be supplied to colour match as best as possible. If you have a colour sample or swatch, please mail it with your booking form.
